Project Based Learning in North Carolina Energy and Sustainability

The North Carolina New Schools Project (NCNSP) works to accelerate systemic, sustainable innovation in secondary schools across the state so that, in time, every North Carolina high school prepares each student for college, careers and life in the 21st century. Ms. Horton will create units of study aligned with one of the four affinity network themes. Drawing on her summer externship research experience, she will create and implement relevant, innovative projects for her classroom to be shared through the STEM Affinity Network’s online platform and with other educators at NCNSP Project Based Learning conferences. Ms. Horton will join Kenan NCNSP Fellows from across the state in presenting a session at the NCNSP Summer Institute in 2013.

Aviation Engineering at the U.S. Navy's Fleet Readiness Center East

Mr. Huskey will join the Navy’s master artisans and skilled engineers as they work to support and maintain the U.S. fleet of helicopter and rotor aircraft. He will share his newfound knowledge and experiences with students by creating relevant classroom curriculum that aligns with state and national standards. Mr. Huskey will provide insight into how relevant workplace challenges can be incorporated into authentic classroom lessons. Additionally, he will develop relationships that extend beyond the military base. Kenan Fellow Daniel Huskey will participate in a hands-on, team environment working on complex engineering and science projects

Opportunities in Aviation through Elizabeth City State University

Mary Ella Jackson will experience aviation and aerospace careers through field trips and job shadowing as she works with experts at ECSU. These collaborations will involve a project with the Civil Air Patrol, Port Discovery, Hands-on Science Center, Aviation Career Education Academy Program and local aviation industries. ECSU’s Aviation Science Program, the only one of its kind in the state of North Carolina, seeks to become a model aviation education program for others in the state and nation. The program is designed to prepare students for the rigorous employment demands of the highly competitive aviation and aerospace industries. This program will be a significant provider of aviation and aerospace-educated employees and entrepreneurs - not only for the local area of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County, but for the State of North Carolina.

Teachers Training Teachers: Delivering Innovative Multimedia Curriculum Resources

Partnered with North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction (DPI) professional development consultants, Ms. Jones will join local North Carolina DPI content specialists and Kenan Fellows from across the state to help develop blended teacher training supporting effective delivery of the new Common Core and Essential Standards. Ms. Jones is tasked with supporting NCDPI’s intensive, blended professional development initiative focused on the transition from the current Standard Course of Study to the new Common Core and Essential Standards. This opportunity puts the Kenan Fellow on the cutting edge of North Carolina’s planned implementation of these new standards for all content areas during the 2012-2013 school year.

Why are Surveys so Hard?

With the upcoming 2012 election, understanding the complexity and pitfalls associated with conducting public opinion surveys is both timely and exciting. NISS’ mission is to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences. NISS is involved in many research projects encompassing various industries such as bioinformatics, data quality and confidentiality, information technology, environmental science, education and complex database management. As a Kenan NISS Fellow, Ms. Josey will learn how surveys are created and administered. She will be tasked with determining the credibility of survey results, and will provide North Carolina students access to innovative instruction in statistics and mathematics.

Designing Safe Aircraft

Despite major improvements in the technology and infrastructure that make flying safe, even more advances are desperately needed as air traffic multiplies. Partnered Dr. John Kizito, Ms. King will uncover the science, math, technology and engineering behind safe air travel as a member of a research team exploring better de-icing methods and evaluating improved ways of measuring propeller thrust. She will follow the development of an aviation project from conceptual design through implementation, testing and reporting, and will create relevant lessons that motivate the next generation of rocket scientists in North Carolina.

Creating a Virtual Library of Common Core Concepts for Site-Based Professional Development-Math

Partnered with DPI Mentor Barbara Bissell, Ms. Kochy will create engaging curriculum and model instructional practices for North Carolina teachers. The Common Core Standards for Math will be implemented in the 2012-13 school year, and the curriculum Ms. Kochy will create includes a module of materials that an LEA can use for on-site professional development. The project will involve capturing digital video of excellent instructional delivery of challenging concepts and creating a detailed facilitators’ guide to accompany each video. Working closely with her mentor, Kenan Fellow Emily Kochy will transform the way English language arts is taught in North Carolina.

Possibilities in the Healthcare Profession

Under the direction of WakeMed doctors, administrators and support staff, Kenan Fellow Whitney Masterson will learn essential skills and responsibilities to be successful both in and out of the clinical setting. She'll experience the dynamic hospital work environment while interacting with WakeMed staff, observing patient care and attending management meetings. Ms. Masterson will Spend five weeks with Wake County’s largest healthcare provider and enrich her interest and understanding of providing quality healthcare. She'll explore and learn about the world of innovative healthcare and the delicate balance between technology and the need for compassionate patient care. She will use her newly acquired knowledge to create engaging curriculum materials that clearly articulate the career possibilities for students and show the connections between curriculum standards and the many high demand healthcare careers awaiting students beyond high school.

Interactive Science at Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute

Kenan Fellow John McGuire will become a member of a team of staff and volunteers at Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI), a non-profit located on the site of a former NASA satellite tracking station, in order to engage in research at the only radio observatory in North Carolina. He will explore space weather and have an opportunity to monitor solar activity using the optical and Radio JOVE telescopes. Mr. McGuire will xperience earth science through tectonic plate motion research using the Plate Boundary Observatory; weather pattern study using the weather stations; earthquake research using the seismometer in conjunction with others; the earth’s magnetic field using the new magnetometer. After creating interactive student materials related to specific instrumentation as it can be used to meet curriculum objectives, Mr. McGuire will share information about the instrument and data collection resources with visiting student groups.
