Kenan Fellows are selected from among the most effective North Carolina public school teachers. While remaining active in the classroom, Fellows participate in a rigorous program that provides opportunities to interact professionally with other outstanding teachers, policy and business leaders and research scientists, and offers professional development aimed at developing strong leadership skills.
North Carolina public school teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels may apply.
Applicants from year-round schools may apply and are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Because Kenan Fellows are teachers with demonstrated success and leadership, most applicants have at least three years experience.
Teachers selected for the Kenan Fellowship make a commitment to work with research mentors and attend Professional Development Institutes. Fellows participate in a five week summer externship and attend two weeks of focused professional development. Teachers are required to develop a curriculum project and pilot it in the classroom during the fellowship period. Kenan Fellows are expected to attend and present at one professional conference each year.
Kenan Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend for the fellowship. Payment is made incrementally throughout the fellowship on completion of specific benchmarks.
Kenan Fellows are provided a laptop and tablet computer for use throughout the fellowship.
No. However, many Kenan Fellows have achieved National Board Certification before or immediately after their fellowships.
A mentor is a research or industry partner. Each Fellow is paired with a mentor who oversees the Fellow’s externship, offering insights to their work, experience in research and, if applicable, access to their labs and resources. Mentors provide support throughout the fellowship.
After successfully completing the fellowship, teachers become part of a networked cohort of Kenan Fellow Alumni. Kenan Fellow Alumni typically take on a variety of leadership roles within their schools, communities and beyond.
