My fellowship is with Ply Gem, a home exterior products plastics manufacturing plant in Fair Bluff. The Fair Bluff plant manufactures plastic fencing, posts and
Home Depot is one of their retailers.
Ply Gem has been in Fair Bluff for years, but a closing in a county railroad
severely impacted their distribution channels. Now they have roughly 30 employees. Luckily, they are developing ties with community partners which include high schools and the local community colleges and plan to hire over 100 employees over the next three years.
The goal of my fellowship is develop engaging lessons that helps give student the tools that they would need to be employed there. I am a tad bit ambitious though, so I decided to create a course. Hopefully it will be selected as a local course option and become a permanent course.
The folks at Ply Gem have been EXTREMELY gracious and forthcoming. And I so honored to work with them so that we can create relevant education for our children. I am a firm believer in modeling, so I am modeling the kind of learning that I want to occur in our classroom. Our students have to believe that what they are learning is both valuable and useful. I believe that working together we can make this happen.
