week 2, day 4

Chuck took Henrietta and I over to Pentair for a bit. Lots of machines were running this morning that had not been the other afternoon. Saw many robots for industry in action, some which Mertek had built or added/modified parts for. Saw this neat idea for an acronym glossary.

Saw Kevin in the paint booth, lots of pressure, thinning of paint and a special outfit for painting. Eventually this painting will be powdered and sent to another company. This will make it more professional, save time and money for the Mertek employees. The customer specifies the paint color.labels labels 2 design review with kirk and mike kevin paint kevin paint 2 acroynym glossary

The screw/bolt organizing is looking GREAT! Signs up and all!!

Spoke with Blair about video taping. Got to get that boy something when I leave this place, he is so helpful and willing to help. Am learning Craig is a lot like some of the high school students I teach, with pics of girls with large breasts on his phone and trying to grab Blair’s junk-he might be the shop bully…

Went with Kevin to Wilson Machine to meet the owner and see all the CNC machines and this half a million dollar wire cutting precision machine. Woa! Lots of expensive equipment in there, they do a lot of large scale tooling (the making of tools).

I noticed at all these shops the safety symbols posted. I looked up the OSHA safety symbols, called hazard pictograms. I am going to incorporate these news ones into my curriculum. The text book has the older ones. I also need to incorporate how to read an MSDS (now SDS) sheet and fill out NFRPA labels.

Met with Jeremy-Jerry’s son. He also does not have a degree, but LOTS of experience. Jeremy is very quiet and reserve. He has 6 children though and is a family man. His job is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. He comes up with the concept and gives the customer a quote. Then the concept goes to project manager or engineer depending on its size. He does ALL the project system layout setting up all the folders. He uses Autocad, Excel, Word and Project all pretty much simultaneously. He uses a lot of math, marketing and computer skills!  Right now he has 15 quotes to get out by next week-EKKK!

We left early to avoid the storm~Hurricane Arthur.
