I am working with Wright Foods in Troy, NC. Wright Foods is a state-of-the-art aseptic food processing company where focus is placed on maintaining the highest quality, and the longest shelf life. A new Microwave technology is used to sterilize the products while enabling the organic contents to maintain maximum nutrients and flavors without the use of traditional refrigeration or preservatives. At Wright Foods, they work with large name companies such as Dole, and with start up companies hoping to launch their first product. This company does not only manufacture the product, but plays an active role in product development and product labeling. Food Scientists will work with the companies to develop the product formulation and conduct comprehensive testing. Wright Foods will ensure quality products that are not only healthier, but can be sold at a competitive price.
During my externship, I will be shadowing and participating in all of the areas within the manufacturing plant. Some of these areas or job roles include, but are not limited to: Research & Design, Quality Assurance, Chemical Engineer, Plant Manager, Quality Control Manager, Food Scientist, Operations Manager, Business Development, Product Innovation, Financial Branch, etc.
Through each area, I will be able to see how a product begins as an idea, becomes formulated, produced, and marketed. I will also be able to see the logistics of maintaining the Wright Foods Plant as a business entity itself. With each area, I will learn how science and math are incorporated into daily activities and applications. I will also learn all of the different educational backgrounds that are within a single plant and become more informed about what careers are available and what education my students need in order to fill the job roles effectively.
I am very excited about this fellowship and I look forward to all that I will learn!
