Light Bulb!

As part of my KF project, students had to teach three people about epigenetics–a topic that is not very accessible to the “average Joe”, much less easy to understand. It wasn’t until students had presented their educational products to their audiences that I began to hear back (from students and parents!) that they finally understood the epigenome, as well as how it relates to genetics and lifestyle choices. I had parents tweet me during their students’ presentations, post “fun facts” about epigenetics on facebook, and even had a few audience members email me and tell me how much they enjoyed learning about their students’ topic. In all actuality, I did not teach my students much about epigenetics. Instead, they had to discover, for themselves, how to complete a research project, make the content accessible to laypeople, and determine the best way in which to present course content. So, while students may have struggled with this curriculum, at the end, I’m sure they felt just like Gru in “Despicable Me.”
