Soldering, Circuits, & Coding

We finished up last week solidifying our ideas for team lesson plans before taking a break to celebrate the 4th of July Holiday. We were fortunate to learn from Dr. Ben Calhoun at the ASSIST Center’s University of Virginia location virtually via video conference regarding sensor nodes.

Then we were able to get hands on in ASSIST’s soldering lab by working on a project from the ground up. I have not soldered since shop class in middle school when my teacher Mr. Klein at Stonewall Middle School taught us to make some neat projects that lit up, made noise, and motivated us to reach beyond our limits. Working with the other educators was fun as we all were like kids again – just exploring, creating, and learning.

I enjoyed the soldering so much I went out to Radio Shack over the weekend and created my own electronics tech ed lab at home. My 16 year old son and I have begun working on our first project – a “traffic light”. Finished product photo to be published in the future.
