Hit the Ground Running

Wow! Six weeks have flown by! It has been an extremely busy start to the new school year.  My role as the school’s AIG teacher allows me to interact with students from K to 5. I feel that I have continued to learn and change in my role of integrating STEM into my work with each grade level. Many of our discussions and workshops at the Summer Institute focused on the engineering design process, MakerSpaces and STEM in the classroom. I have grown and improved in regards to my lessons – both planning and implementation as a direct result of my work over the summer.  Exposure to such a variety of professionals at the EPA has also encouraged me to plan enriching experiences for my students as the year progresses.

My county is beginning reading workshop in a new way so I feel like I have been immersed in that as well as STEM for these first six weeks. As a result, I am working with other teachers on my county STEM leadership committee to create lessons that will support and enrich the reading units. Integrating STEM into other areas of the curriculum has been a goal of mine this year as well as to support teachers in trying out new activities and projects.  Our students have already benefited from the experiences and challenges in the Discovery Lab from creating planetary landers to the Most Magnificent Things to spaghetti and marshmallow towers! I feel that we have already done a variety of things to engage them in STEM thinking so far this year and this is just the beginning!
