Understanding Data Mining: Extracting, Organizing, and Analyzing Large Sets of Data

Assessment

To assess students’ understanding of the material, you could:

  • Collect the lesson packets and check students’ responses in sections II and IV
  • Have students create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast using the graphing calculator and R
  • Take a survey of preference—who likes R better than the calculator, and vice versa?
  • Ask students to describe the usefulness of R
  • Have students print and submit their codes and scatterplots
  • Have students create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the three methods of variable selection
  • Ask students to develop their own ideas of situations in which it would be helpful to identify the most influential variables (other times when data mining could be useful)
  • Collect the lesson packets
