Problem Based Learning in the Physics Classroom

Lesson 12: Final Presentations

Introduction

Students present their final roller coaster designs to the class

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will effectively communicate their understanding to an audience of their peers

Classroom Time Required

  • Each presentation will likely take at least 10 minutes; depending upon the number of teams, the presentations could take multiple class periods

Materials Needed

  • “Final Presentation Rubric” handout for each team (available on the assessment page)
  • “End of Project Reflection” handout

Activities

  • Give each student team an opportunity to present.
  • As a team presents, grade them according to the rubric
  • Include a brief Q and A portion after each presentation, encouraging students in the audience to ask questions
  • After the presentations are finished have students complete a third, Self and Peer Assessment form and an “End of Project Reflection” form.

Modifications/Author Comments

  • Reflection is a very important piece of the PBL process, so it is critical that students have an opportunity to think about what they have learned during the project. The form also gives them an opportunity to think about what they will do differently for the next project
