Celia Rowland is a math and statistics teacher at William G. Enloe Magnet High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She teaches AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB and Geometry. She has been teaching at the high school level since 2002 and holds her National Board certification in AYA Mathematics. Ms. Rowland holds a master’s degree in public administration and a master’s degree in statistics and mathematics. She was a hospital statistician and administrator before moving to the teaching profession in 1993.

This project was developed in order to give students the 21st century exposure to statistical computing software and its power. The R statistical software is heavily utilized by the Federal Reserve Bank and international companies around the globe.

Mentor Bios

Hao Zhang portrait

Dr. Hao (Helen) Zhang (hzhang2@stat.ncsu.edu) is an associate professor in the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University. Dr. Zhang received her Ph.D. in Statistics from the Department of Statistics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2002 under the direction of Grace Wahba. Her research interests include nonparametric smoothing, model selection, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Recently she also works on problems involved longitudinal and survival data. Dr. Zhang obtained her B.S. degree in Mathematics from Beijing University in 1996.

Yufeng Liu portrait

Dr. Yufeng Liu (yfliu@email.unc.edu) is an associate professor in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. (2004) and M.S. (2001) from The Ohio State University, and his B.S. (1999) from Nankai University. His research interests include statistical machine learning, data mining, highdimensional data analysis, nonparametric studies and functional estimation, bioinformatics, and the design and analysis of experiments.
