My Fellowship: Leading Educators to Homebase

Hi! My name is Angel Mills and I am the K-12 ESL Lead Teacher and Program Specialst for the Lee County Schools. My fellowship with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is called “Leading Educators to Homebase.” During our summer externship, the amazing team of educators pictured in the photo above and I (second from the right) will be researching and tagging high quality, standards aligned resources for teacher across the state of North Carolina to access and use for instruction within a state-wide system for student information, instructional planning and teacher evaluation called Homebase. My mentor, Mrs. Carmella Fair (front row left, first) is an Education Consultant in the Learning Systems Division of NCDPI. In addition to finding high quality resources for teachers to use, I will also be serving as a regional “ambassador” to help teachers understand and explore the instructional features of Homebase. The team of Homebase fellows will help deliver professional development about Homebase throughout the year, as well as design and implement lessons using the resources that we find and provide to the Homebase system. In addition to all of this, each of us will be creating our own projects that support the Homebase effort within the state. I am still thinking of exactly what my project will be, but I know I want to do something with helping to better define how English as a second language classes fit into the Homebase system.
