Hello! 🙂
My name is Jennifer Spivey. I just finished my second year of teaching. I teach Biology and Earth/Environmental Science at South Columbus High School in rural Tabor City, NC. I coach Junior Varsity Cheerleading and assist with Varsity Women’s Track. This year as a school wide project, we began keeping bees. I am the resident beekeeper on campus. We have two hives on campus and I have my own personal hives at home. It has made for a very interesting hobby!
I have an undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University in Biological Sciences with a minor in Criminal Justice. I am currently working on my Masters in the Art of Teaching in Secondary Science at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
I am an extreme animal lover! I have a 50 year old pet Ornate Box Turtle named Bridgette. Her favorite food is blueberries. I adopted her 2 years ago. She has lived the vast majority of her life in captivity so she cannot be returned to the wild, which is where I wish she could be. I also raise champion show Boxers. I have a cat named Doodles and I have recently adopted an 8 week old kitten that I have been nursing back to health.
Before entering teaching, I worked as an Environmental Educator for Blue Jay Point County park off of Falls Lake in Wake County. I loved it! I gave interpreted nature hikes, instructed pond studies, and planned camps for children and adults. While working there I began my certification as an North Carolina Environmental Educator.
Besides beekeeping, I have many other hobbies and interests. My parents have a large garden that I help with every year. Everything that is harvested is preserved and packaged for the upcoming winter. We have everything from frozen butterbeans and corn to canned tomatoes and pickles. I also love to dance. While at NCSU, I was on the Dance Team for 2 years. I spend most weekends in North Myrtle Beach shagging. I am an avid NC State fan! I attend as many games as I possibly can throughout the year. Go Pack!
