For my externship, I am working in lab in which is studying salmonella by plating different organisms onto selective media. What I am noticing is that for this work to be accomplished in a quickly and orderly manner, lab technicians must be able to use algebra and mix chemicals independently. So while most of the science directly relates to biology alone, the underlying skills to work in a biology lab are from the chemistry standards. Specifically ratio math, mixing solutions, and measuring analog lab devices. I will make sure to make the connection between those skills and working in a lab in classes this coming year!
