About My Fellowship

 About Me…Pittman_Web.png
April Cain Pittman

I am a teacher at Gray’s Creek High School (Go Bears!),
a wife to a fellow agriculture teacher,
girls                a mother to two beautiful girls (1 and 2 years old),
an avid hunter and lover of nature,
a chef lost in a working mom’s life,
and both a learner and teacher with a                                                                         passion for all things related to agriculture.
My love for the new “local foods movement” brought me to the Kenan Fellows Program. Through this opportunity, I will be able to create curriculum for my classroom and for other teachers or public educators. I hope to create something that will ignite a passion for agriculture and sustainability in everyone.
This opportunity would not be possible without the generous support of the

North Carolina Cooperative Extension

and the 4-H and Extension Agents at the Robeson County Extension Office. My mentor Shea Ann Dejarnette, is a 4-H Youth Development Agent with a strong passion for helping our children grow into leaders. As a committed FFA Advisor, I understand Shea’s love for our young leaders .
There are three other agents supporting me on my journey to learn about local food production and agriculture systems. Mack Johnson is the Horticulture Extension Agent and is highly knowledgeable of problems that may arise in plant production.  Janice Fields, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, is an expert on food safety and preservation. Finally, Casey Hancock is the Local Foods Agent and works diligently to establish relationship between farmers and the local community.
I am so thankful to have a team of mentors for this project. I hope that I can only give back to them what they have given to me.
