Melissa Harris's Blog

A-ha

I know you cannot believe it, but this blog is past due….I was having trouble deciding how to write it. Have I not had an a-ha, have I had too many or did they all come way early and I have forgotten them.  As I was riding with my “Samwise” this morning, she reminded me of them. What would I do without her? Many of my EUREKA moments happened early!

A-HA: When I met David “Red” whom is a welder-a blue-collar job, he has learned from doing and apprenticing. He knew more about Chemistry than many physical science teachers. He reminded me how important it is I teach how to read MSDS/SDS sheets, something many teachers push to the side to focus on tested content.

A-HA: When the CNC guys showed me how they convert all metric to standard, a lost art that must be taught and then practiced-another area most science teachers skip to get to testable material.

A-HA: A virtual tour of Mertek would not only help me show my students about this place, but also help market Mertek and what they can do for other companies.

A-HA: Melody, an office manager, how organized she is which makes her more efficient and valuable to her company! My students need to see this instead of me just telling them.

A-HA: Family and vacation are important, do not work yourself to death!

A-HA: My ideas are out of the box, hence why I have the precious gift that not everyone has been given.

A-HA: GREAT teachers come in many different ages, sizes, locations and disciplines

A-HA: A coworker relationship turned into a friendship!

A-HA: Being treated like a queen of science needs to stay with me when I’m being treated like a student who knows nothing when I go back to work soon.
