About Me

Welcome to Elizabeth Helms’ Kenan Fellowship Blog!

This summer I am working with the Genetic Engineering and Society Center at NC State University. My mentors for the program are Dr. Fred Gould and Dr. Jennifer Kuzma, the co-directors of the GES Society. I am splitting my externship  time between Dr. Gould’s research lab at NCSU and in the GES center.

I am a North Carolina native, and a 2012 graduate of Campbell University with a BS in Biology with added Teacher Licensure. I spent three years teaching science at Lee County High School in Sanford, NC. I currently teach in the Freshman Academy at Knightdale High School of Collaborative Design.

I recently received my ESL add-on licensure and and will finish an MEd in ESL in the spring of 2016. My niche in education is language learning in science. I have taught three years of sheltered ESL sciences that help language learners to process English while learning science content.

Outside of education and graduate work, I enjoy reading, birding, and hiking with my husband.
