My Kenan Fellowship

I am excited to be a Kenan Fellow. I have heard amazing stories from friends and colleagues who have gone through the fellowship. I was encouraged by them to apply for the program. And here I am, ready to go on this journey. My internship is with PlyGem in Cary, NC. I know that I will learn a lot about the housing products industry. But, I am most excited to be part of the Innovation Group where new products and ideas are implemented to see if they have a viable place in PlyGem. I am reading the book The Innovator’s DNA which recounts the stories and the different thinking that spurred today’s innovations. I find that my thinking is, at times, more aligned with these innovators rather than educators. I ask why and how can we do this differently in my classroom and school. I have big ideas for projects and units, but I am not the best at the specifics to implement them. I am excited for my journey because it will be a thinking time for me, a time to think about thinking differently. I hope to capture some of the innovators thinking and share with my third graders. I have a big poster in my classroom with “Reading is Thinking” written on it. However, it is even bigger than that… “Living is Thinking” might be the next poster.
