All About My Fellowship!!!

Greetings,

I am a 6th grade teacher at Warsaw Middle School in Warsaw NC.  I have had the pleasure of teaching Language Arts for the last 3 years in Duplin County. Before starting in Duplin County, I was a high school English teacher in Sampson County where I was born and raised.  I taught for 4 years before wanting to switch to Middle Grades Education.

Applying for the Kenan Fellows opportunity was a tough decision.  In my mind I was thinking how can this opportunity, which is STEM based, be used in a Language Arts classroom. Before I applied, I researched what the Kenan Fellows was and I immediately knew that I had to apply.  After my research, I knew I wanted to be a Kenan Fellows because as a teacher you should always strive to make what you do relevant to your students as well as what is going on in the world.  With the Kenan Fellowship, I wanted to learn how I could engage my students more with hands on experiences as well as dive into their brains to showcase their talents.

The goal of my internship is to bring what I learn from National Spinning, Mega Force and James Sprunt Community College into the classroom to expand their minds. My goal is to develop curriculum based on what I have been doing and observing for the last few weeks. I have learned so much from my mentor about the company as well as the county.
