I am very excited to begin my journey as a Kenan Fellow and work with Carol from STEM WEST. I can’t wait to see everything that I learn from the diversity and equity mapping that we will be adding to and creating.
As I begin this fellowship, there are several things that I would like to gain from this experience. I want to be knowledgable about STEM opportunities in my region. I know that sharing this knowledge with the families of my students and my community will help create significant opportunities for them.
Diversity in education is something that I have genuinely passionate about. In my area and surrounding areas, there is not a great deal of diversity in schools from the teacher standpoint. I want to use my internship and time during this fellowship to explore why that is and how we can change it.
Finally, I would like to become a more persuasive grant writer. Through this fellowship, I will meet other participants that are influential grant writers that can educate me in this area. My mentor, Carol, has also expressed that she will help me strengthen this skill as well.
