Lesson 4: Elaborate — Facets of Biotechnology

Introduction

Biotechnology crosses many science disciplines to provide solutions for a wide array of problems.

Learning Outcomes

Students will research and present information on an aspect of biotechnology.

Curriculum Alignment

Goal 7.05 NCSCOS: Investigate aspects of biotechnology including: Specific genetic information available. Careers. Economic benefits to North Carolina. Ethical issues. Impact for agriculture.

Classroom Time Required

One day each for initial research and for presentations. Additional class time may be provided for research and the completion of the project, if desired.

Materials Needed

  • Copies of “New Tools for the State’s Industries” brief from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
  • Display Boards or other materials for presentations

Technology Resources

  • Computers with internet access
  • LCD projector for PowerPoint presentations

Pre‐Activities

Lessons 1‐3 of Biotechnology in North Carolina Today

Activities

Students will select a topic to research from the publication “New Tools for the State’s Industries” report from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. They will complete a research product and present this product to their classmates.

While students present, their classmates should take notes on important items.

Rubric for research product and presentation

Modifications

Students can use various tools to complete their research. These include video, internet sites, publications and magazines. The number of sources required could be less for students with disabilities, or a more abbreviated product.

Alternative Assessments

Students will be given choice in their selection of a topic and in their research product.
