This year I am working as a Kenan Fellow with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) on the Let’s Measure Together project. The goal of the project is to create teacher professional development about testing in North Carolina. I will be focusing on the Measures of Student Learning (MSLs) since I teach high school social studies.
I can’t wait to intern at DPI. I really hope to gain a better understanding of the test development process through this experience. I want to share that understanding with classroom teachers across North Carolina. Throughout the school year, teachers are incredibly busy. Most of us struggle to keep up with all of the new changes to testing that have occurred quickly because we have amazingly little time to sit down and sift through all of that information. We spend countless hours planning units, grading papers, contacting parents, and going through staff development, so we don’t have a lot of extra time to tease out exactly what will be expected of us and our students at the end of the year.
I really want to support North Carolina teachers and make their jobs easier, so I’m excited to create teacher deliverables and professional development about MSLs. I also hope to continue to grow as a teacher leader throughout this experience. I can’t wait to get started!
Emily, as a fellow MSL tested teacher, I thank you for working on this project! I have so many questions, and not enough answers. I look forward to learning about your project, in more detail, and seeing the end result. I know it will help me, as well as our fellow educators!
Thanks Erin!! I’m excited to see the end result.
