About My Fellowship

Throughout the summer, I’m working with the North Carolina Science Festival on an elementary school program about the physics of flight.

First in Flight

I’m working with Jonathan Frederick, Director of the NC Science Festival, and Marissa Hartzler, Statewide Programs Coordinator for the NC Science Festival. These people have been incredible to work with thus far, and their limitless creativity is so inspiring!

We are looking to extend our reach of the Festival to not only schools, but to libraries and clubs as well. We are creating a set of lessons for teachers and non-teachers alike to use to teach young students about flight and how it works.

While we’re taking a scientific spin on the topic, we’re also considering the rich history our state has with flight. Looking through the “First in Flight” lens, we wonder if this phrase holds implications for North Carolina’s future.

Currently, I am working on reaching out to libraries across the state, finding their needs in programming for the NC Science Festival. I am writing lessons, both science and literacy focused, so that teachers can have these resources at their disposal. I’m also prototyping some paper airplanes and other paper aircraft to see how our project ideas will come together for students!
