Goals on Goals on Goals

My work here at Cotton Inc. has the ultimate goal of creating curriculum that can be used in classrooms to help students understand the importance of Cotton. At this point, I have identified that this type of material can be achieved through a cross-curricular and cross-grade level/cross-content area design.

As an educator, this internship will prove to challenge me in the ways that I think about curriculum and the ways I think about educating students. Since the goal is to educate students on different aspects cotton can provide, there are numerous directions in which I can take the educational material(s) I provide. Everything from math and science, to the arts and design field. The goal will be to fine-tune a product that will address some of the bigger aspects of cotton. There will obviously be too much to place in the product into one curriculum.

You could say that my process this summer, in relation from my internship to the my education foray, is a ginning process. (See what I did there??) The purpose of the gin was to process cotton through a mill like structure, in order to “pick out” the seeds and lints that would reside in the cotton after it was harvested. Prior to the gin, it was a handmade process that took many minutes for one bole of cotton to be milled through. Like the gin, it will be my goal to process through this company (Cotton Inc.) and determine what is best for the field of education. While everything in this company can (and does) relate to real-life application, there are many aspects that are broader and grander that can cover a myriad of things.

    Doug –

I’m excited to see this cross-curricular/grade product you create! Cotton Incorporated is an amazing organization. Not only do they have amazing technology, they themselves are teachers (to those in the industry). I don’t envy your position – there’s SO much to do/see/create in that space.

I look forward to seeing it all!
