Week 4 – Goals of the Internship

As we work in our internship, we have set goals we keep our eyes set on. We, of course, want to develop effective project plans that our fellow educators can utilize, but we also want to do more in-depth work to form an understanding of what we are teaching.

Goals:

1: Apply understanding of sensing technologies & system design toward the fabrication of a One Health inspired wearable sensor system. By doing this, we are having students learn about not only what sensors are and how they work, but also about what is the One Health Initiative. Students will be able to apply the use of sensors in a positive way and in a real-world application.

2: Develop educational lessons with focus on one or more of the following:  one health, energy harvesting, sensing, system design, e-textiles, nanotechnology, and/or engineering design/prototyping. Our lesson plans will not only teach about the One Health Initiative and how to apply sensors, but they will also practice applying the Engineering Design Process and learn about energy harvesting devices. In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply 21st Century skills in a variety of ways.

3. Create infrastructure around One Health Competition to allow for staged growth & program sustainability. Our lesson plans will be going onto the One Health Website for other teachers to use as tools for students to learn about sensors while participating in the One Health Challenge. The One Health Challenge requires students to design and build wearable devices that utilize sensors to monitor and collect data on health. When we use our lessons in the class, we have the opportunity to participate in the One Health Challenge and provide further support for the program to expand.

While keeping these goals in mind, we are able to stay on track in developing meaningful projects dedicated to teaching about the world of sensors.
