Being both a teacher and coach has opened many opportunities for me to demonstrate to my students the ties between academia and life. My Kenan project had me working with the statistics on running and track. Being a track and cross country coach and having my athletes also in my AP Statistics class, this was a great opportunity to bridge the two! When the students were working on their project that I developed from my internship I actually had one of my athletes say “oh my gosh!! This is how you guys figure out our potential future race times and how we can adjust our training. It’s like real math done!” As funny as this may seem, it was really rewarding to be able to show the students that in their athletics and extracurricular activities they can actually apply what they are learning in the classroom to better their lives.
