As my internship comes to an end I realize that the relationships that I have built, and development of tools that I have added to my pedagogical and content tool box, will be on going.  I have built a problem based unit that will enlighten the learning experience of my students and the students at my school.  My students will learn about the smart grid and the STEM process in an authentic problem solving setting.

In addition to the solar charger exploration. I will be working with FSC  to expand this experience.

Authentic Classroom Connections

With the assistance of Landon Mackey and Catie McEntee and the support from Dr. Carpenter and the Freedm System Center, I will utilize the solar panels built by students from a previous project to charge renewable batteries used at my school. This will immerse my students in authentic application while utilizing Smart Grid energy and saving money for my school. The realization of the battery recharge project was the high point among many experienced at FSC. This will have real application in my class and help my students make STEM connections that will impact their worlds.

This inspired me to pursue my hope to utilize photovoltaic power for my school and my community. I plan to apply for Solar Schools matching program for the installation of 3-5 kW solar PV arrays at Wake Forest Middle School, providing clean, green renewable energy in our state.  So the next set of challenges will be getting WCSP approval for the project (no small task) and fund raising. With the support and encouragement of my mentor Dr. Pam Carpenter and my principal Stacey Weddle, this vision has the potential to become a reality.

Doesn’t this roof look built for solar panels?!!!!

That’s what I have always thought.  (….. watch for updates)
