New Position, New School, New Goals

Originally, I thought my goals would involve Project Based Learning (PBL) because I took two professional development courses regarding PBL. However, since I stepped foot on my new campus, I realized I have to go back to the basics. I have a new position as a K-2 ESL teacher, which means I will immerse myself in the ESL culture to really learn my position. In addition, I am a part of a new school family, which means I don’t know anyone; except Mary Robbins, my previous student teacher, who decided to join me at my new school. (I am so blessed and happy to work with Mary, as she begins her learning journey, as a kindergarten teacher.) I really want to get to know my new school family and community by being involved in as many school events that I possibly can. I am fortunate that my new position affords me the opportunity to work with 21 school teachers, which is a great start to building and maintaining relationships.

I am on my way to meeting my goals. To complete the first goal I am collaborating with my team mate to ensure that I meet the needs of my students. I will attend the district ESL meetings to learn as much as I can about my position and department. To meet the second goal, I became a PTA and School Leadership Team member. I volunteered to mentor Mary, in her first year of teaching. I also volunteered to be a Grants lead, providing staff with grant information and mentoring. I am so happy and grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in my field, take on additional leadership opportunities, be five minutes from home, and meet new people. I am right where I am supposed to be!
