Lesson 8: Muddy Water

Students are taught the names of and uses of available laboratory equipment. Students are given a sample of muddy water which they must attempt to clean using the available equipment. Students write a procedure for cleaning the muddy water

Standards: 

1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 2.01, 2.03, 3.08

Classroom Time Required: 

One 50 minute class period for teacher to demonstrate equipment to class. One 50 minute class period for students to design and test their water cleaning system.

Materials Need: 
  • Funnels
  • filter paper
  • hand pumps
  • rubber tubing
  • hot plate
  • condensers
  • flasks
  • tongs
  • pot holders
  • muddy water and any other available lab equipment such as filtering flasks
  • metal stands and clamps etc.
