My mentor partnership was a very valuable experience. Being a DPI Kenan Fellow is a little different. I did not get much one on one time with my mentor. Although I worked independently a lot this summer and fall because my mentor was incredibly busy, we made the most of the time we did spend together. However, when I did, I learned so much! It was great to have the ear of the entire NC testing program. She really valued our feedback about the implementation and content of the new MSLs (now titled North Carolina Final Exams). She asked us tons of questions about our classroom experiences, and really wanted to hear our perspectives.
My mentor was a really great connector. Because she was frequently in meetings or away at conferences, she took care to set up opportunities for us to meet and talk to different people at DPI. I felt privileged to spend 30-45 minutes with so many people working in various positions that influence testing and accountability. While I would have enjoyed a more hands on approach to mentorship, I appreciate the experience I did have.
