About My Fellowship

My fellowship is titled “Let’s Measure Together” and is in partnership with the DPI Assessment and Accountability Division. The fellowship focuses on the development and implementation of the new Measures of Student Learning and a review of the End of Grade and End of Course assessments. Since I am in a year round school I started my fellowship a bit earlier than others and I spent 2 weeks at the DPI building downtown. The director, my mentor Dr. Tammy Howard, is simply amazing. She is smart, kind, organized and very dedicated. In the first week Dr. Howard introduced me to her staff, allowed me to sit in on small group and division wide meetings, and set up interview times with a number of her staff so I could get to know what the different positions do and all of the work that goes into developing the assessments.  I was also able to spend some time over at NCSU in their test development division, Technical Outreach for Public Schools (TOPS), and I sat in on 3 days of training that showed science teachers from 4th grade through high school how to develop and review test items that my show up on the MSL’s or the new Classroom Based Item Bank (CBIB), which will offer online assessment items that teachers can use in the classroom. My externship will continue throughout the year as I track out and head back to DPI in September, December and again in March.
