Summer Experience

My summer has absolutely been amazing! Tomorrow will be my last day with Surry Yadkin EMC.  As I have told many, I had no clue what went on behind or beyond those walls.  But the knowledge and experience has been colossal!  If I can share a small inkling IMG_1238Surry Yadkin Officewith my students,  I feel that they will benefit greatly from my experience through the fellowship with Surry Yadkin Electric and Kenan Fellows.

This experience will touch my students in all aspects of their lives from the classroom to driving a car to the light switch in their bedroom. There is no tool that will measure the importance of electricity in our daily routines worldwide.

I will walk through the doors of my classroom “energized and powered up!”

A-Ha Moment

Where do I begin? My entire summer has been an A-Ha moment, from working in the accounts receivable and service department to sitting a power pole and marking a right-a-way to visiting the Catawba Nuclear Plant. It has been an amazing experience. However, the willingness of the employees to share their expertise has been incredible. But the grand A-Ha moment was going up in the bucket of the bucket truck and connecting a transformer to the pole. I was 35 feet high! Amazing! I now have a new appreciation for the power in my house!   I cannot wait to share my experience with my students.IMG_1010IMG_1032We are adding a trasnformer to the power pole.20140702_120119IMG_1038We are going to add a transformer to the power pole.

Externship – Successes – Challenges

As far as challenges.  Lots of information.  I need time to funnel the information into action plans for my students.  This will take a little quite time to accomplish this task.

Connection – Summer Externship and the Classroom Curriculum

This summer has been an awesome ride!

I can engage my students from the knowledge that I have obtained through this internship in many ways.   I will focus on the generation, transmission, distribution, and delivery of energy to the student’s home. Students will complete a multitude of tasks through hands-on activities while making real world connections.

Also, through SmartHub , students will be able to monitor and make predictions based on their power usage.

Technology, Classroom ….Learning

I am very fortunate that we are a 1 to 1 school. And this year, our students will receive new chrome books as we enter our 6th year. However, I believe the biggest challenge that we face is “which” program, software, or link to use.  We have a multitude to choose from and the variety ranges from very simple to use to major complexity.

I thoroughly enjoyed our sessions at NCCAT introducing programs that were new to me. This allows me the opportunity to choose a program or several programs that will meet the needs of my students.
