So Many Things!

Since finishing my internship at the museum so many things have happened.

  • I got a new principal
  • I got a new classroom
  • I got a new teaching partner
  • I got new students
  • I met 53 sets of parents
  • I became my school’s first ever Math department chair
  • I helped make big decisions about my school’s new schedules
  • I helped make big decisions about what advanced math will look like at my school
  • I started a new school year teaching Math 6, Math 6 plus, and 6th grade Science!

I feel like I haven’t even had time to breathe, let alone think about my Kenan Fellows project.  I am not implementing my project until the Spring so it is pretty tempting to just put it on the back burner when so many things seem so much more pressing.  However, I have done some more work on my project and have some more to do during the month of September so I cannot give in to the temptation.

I am really looking forward to bringing Citizen Science into my classroom more this year and I am really looking forward to having my mentor visit my class because it will mean a lot to my students.

This week I am tasked with outlining the components of my project and what it will take for them to be successful.

My Citizen Science Project involves growing cultures of microbes found in soil, which requires a lot of materials.  Luckily, Science House is supplying these materials and I just received the email this week that they have been ordered so that aspect of the project will be a success.

The project also requires students to collect accurate data about the cultures we grow and identify the plants that we are studying.  In order for this aspect to be a success I will have to start talking to students about scientific accuracy, only changing one variable at a time, and that sort of thing now.

Lastly, my project will require that I am very organized and that my students follow directions well.  We will see how that one goes.
