About My Fellowship

I love my job teaching at Broadview Middle School in Burlington, NC. I teach 8th graders Language Arts and Social Studies, and every day varies. Heading into my fourth year of teaching, I look forward to providing my students the full E-Mammal Experience.

I heard about the Kenan Fellowship through some friends of mine that urged me to apply. I did a little research–the opportunity seemed perfect. I wanted to network with other educators around North Carolina and further my craft through developing authentic, engaging, and meaningful curriculum. I am so thrilled to be working with Dr. Schuttler, Mamatha, Denise, and Cathy to build on the efforts of last year’s Students Discover team to bring E-Mammal into middle school classrooms.

Our goal is to change how science is taught. No small task, but through the plans for scaling to other NC teachers and the Students Discover/Kenan partnership, it is possible.  The great part of this whole program is empowering students to realize that THEY can be scientists. They don’t even have to wait until they are older–they can be scientists NOW.
