Students will determine if a golf course affects the water chemistry of a stream. Students will measure levels of oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD, alkalinity, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, pH and turbidity in water samples from two sampling sites in a stream, (upstream and downstream of a golf course).

Standards:

1.01, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.08, 3.04, 3.05, 3.06, 3.07, 3.08, 4.09

Classroom Time Required:

If each group is assigned a different analytical task, students should be able to complete the water analysis from both sites within 20 minutes. Students should complete a lab report with bar graph and data table. Add 30 minutes for this.

Materials Need:
  • Stream water samples
  • sample bottles
  • turbidity tube
  • oxygen meter
  • water test kits
