6 Months Later

6 months have passed since my Kenan Fellowship ended, which is very hard for me to believe. As I have written before, those three weeks changed me more than I ever could have imagined. My mind was opened up to things I had only dreamed of, and my approach to education has become even more inquiry and STEM based than… Read more »

Impacts on Teaching

It has been a while since my last post. Life has been a whirlwind since my internship ended in July. I’ve traveled, started my masters program, and started teaching at a new middle school where I was quickly added to the e-Learning team and started spearheading EdCamp East NCĀ (Shameless plug to sign up if you haven’t already!). Somewhere in there… Read more »

Kenan…it Changes you, Man!

So something interesting happened today. We are back in school for workdays this week leading up to the first day of school on Monday. As part of that we are doing all of the typical clerical stuff, going over procedures and policies, and tapping into our strengths. Today we talked about college and career readiness as well as differentiation. To… Read more »

We Came in Like a Wrecking Ball

“So you teach science then?” This question follows my enthusiastic explanation of my summer almost every time. A lot of people that I talk to can’t figure out why a math teacher would spend their summer doing science research. More so, they are baffled by how this experience could benefit my students at all in my 8th grade math classroom…. Read more »

Life Outside the Fishbowl

I may not have mentioned before that the labs at the museum are fishbowl labs. That means that the walls are glass so that museum visitors can see into the lab to experience what the scientists are doing. They can see fossils being prepared, microbes being looked at under microscopes, petri dishes being prepared, ants being studied under microscopes, etc…. Read more »

This is my Fight Song

I’ve been thinking on this one for almost two weeks. I’m finding it incredibly difficult to find the words to accurately sum up the experience that I’ve had this summer. I honestly don’t know if there are words that can fully encompass the magic that is a Kenan Fellowship. I do know that this experience has changed me, and there… Read more »

When Writer’s Block Sets in…

A lot has happened since my last post. My mind is still trying to piece things together which is part of why I haven’t blogged about it yet. In short, Team Jaws spent about 20 hours in a car together driving to and from Gainesville, FL, about 24+ hours in the basement of the Nature Research Center at UF taking… Read more »

Is this real life?

I find myself asking that A LOT lately. For starters, I work in a paleontology lab. I’m surrounded by things that are millions of years old. MILLIONS. I can’t even envision what one million dollars looks like let alone millions of years. Now anyone can go to the museum and be surrounded by objects of this same age, but to… Read more »

Stop…Hammertime!

Before I dive in to the meat of this post, I want to take this opportunity to geek out about sharks for a minute. First and foremost, in my self-created hierarchy of coolest sharks ever, Megalodon is at the top of the list. Why? For starters, its teeth are the size of my hand or bigger and it’s three times… Read more »

Come on into the water!

Actually, you should probably stay out of the water, especially if you’re in North Carolina. Today was cooler than yesterday. Something tells me that is going to be an ongoing trend. As soon as we got to the lab today, Bucky gave us a 5 gallon bucket full of what most of us would consider trash and told us to… Read more »
