6 Months Later

6 months have passed since my Kenan Fellowship ended, which is very hard for me to believe. As I have written before, those three weeks changed me more than I ever could have imagined. My mind was opened up to things I had only dreamed of, and my approach to education has become even more inquiry and STEM based than… Read more »

Impacts on Teaching

It has been a while since my last post. Life has been a whirlwind since my internship ended in July. I’ve traveled, started my masters program, and started teaching at a new middle school where I was quickly added to the e-Learning team and started spearheading EdCamp East NC (Shameless plug to sign up if you haven’t already!). Somewhere in there… Read more »

Life Outside the Fishbowl

I may not have mentioned before that the labs at the museum are fishbowl labs. That means that the walls are glass so that museum visitors can see into the lab to experience what the scientists are doing. They can see fossils being prepared, microbes being looked at under microscopes, petri dishes being prepared, ants being studied under microscopes, etc…. Read more »

Is this real life?

I find myself asking that A LOT lately. For starters, I work in a paleontology lab. I’m surrounded by things that are millions of years old. MILLIONS. First and foremost, in my self-created hierarchy of coolest sharks ever, Megalodon is at the top of the list. Why? For starters, its teeth are the size of my hand or bigger and it’s three times… Read more »

Welcome to Jurassic Park

If you can’t recognize the music in the music above, please stop reading this blog and go watch Jurassic Park. At that point, I welcome you back with open arms. Now that we are on the same page,*almost* all today my childhood dreams came true. I say almost because I was not channeling my inner Dr. Ellie Sattler out in… Read more »

The Movers and the Shakers

NCCAT. Was. Awesome. I had high expectations for it because I have only heard good things about it from Fellows and non-Fellows alike, but I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations. As an educator, it is so rare to find professional development that is relevant, applicable, and treats you like a professional. I have sat in so many… Read more »

In the beginning…

Growing up with two brothers meant that I found a lot of interest in “boy” things. Dinosaurs and sharks were at the forefront. I remember my parents going on a date, the only date I honestly remember them ever going on, to see “Jurassic Park,” and I remember the first time my mom took us to the local video rental shop… Read more »
