White Water Rafting on the Nantahala River!!

Today, I had the pleasure of white water rafting for the first time with an awesome group of teachers! What an awesome experience! The water was 50 degrees! The Nantahala river is the primary power source for the Duke Power hydroelectric plant. Each morning water is released from the bottom of dam, which is why the water is so cold. When the water is released, it turns a turbine that is connected a generator which produces energy. We also stopped to learn about the abiotic life on Claire Island (named after a researcher). I gained knowledge on the usage of many different types of plants from flavoring root beer to making jam/wine. I feel a FIELD TRIP coming on for the kiddos!!! :) #kenanfellowsPD
