Knowledge Management in K-12 Schools……When, Where, How, & Why???

Knowledge management is a term that I learned in one of my undergraduate business courses while studying at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.  Knowledge management can be defined as efficiently handling information and resources within a commercial organization. In a time where teachers are constantly transitioning to new schools or leaving the profession, knowledge management is a concept that we should adopt in K-12 schools.  Essentially, the curriculum products that I have written will provide an in-depth view on how a novice teacher may integrate wearable devices into middle school science and robotics classes.  There are many challenges and success that I have experienced when I began creating my own knowledge management tool or better known as a curriculum product.

Challenges:

  • Providing every detail of each step I take to ensure I prepare engaging lesson for the students.
    • Securing resources and tutorials for teachers who made need additional help if needed was extremely difficult but is crucial in the knowledge management process. Many companies integrate video tutorials into their knowledge management process.  Schools should adopt this process and create videos about the best instructional strategies and practices for their particular school. They could create a website or blog to post this information for new teachers to the school.
  • Ensuring that the curriculum products will be easy to read and implement into my classroom
    • As a result, I have created a curriculum product that breaks down each section. In addition, I have included resources and links to documents and other instructional material. Finally, I added any classroom management tips that will help improve the delivery of the curriculum product. Because we all know that if you can’t manage the behaviors in your class, you won’t be able to teach ANYTHING!

Successes

  • “With Experience, Comes Wisdom”……Hopefully!
    • When I began writing my first curriculum product, I was a little overwhelmed with adding each step, link and worksheet to the plan. What an extremely time consuming process!  After completing my first rough draft and receiving feedback, writing my second curriculum product was EASY!!
  • Knowledge Management in Education!
    • I think that I created curriculum products that will begin the process to help schools manage teacher knowledge. It is such an important concept and if schools adopt this concept, I believe it will help make the process of hiring and retaining new teachers a lot easier for administrative staff.
