Clean and Green

Build your knowledge about green practices, local foods and air quality.

You must hold or plan to receive a master’s degree or higher before June 2014 in order to be considered for this project.

Born out of a desire to ensure the long-term viability of the Fort Bragg installation, Sustainable Sandhills has taken the charge for lowering the environmental impact beyond the borders of the base. Understanding the multi-faceted approach to environmental stewardship, Sustainable Sandhills offers a range of programs that seek to cultivate an awareness of impact and strategies to decrease our footprint.

Through this fellowship, you will have an opportunity to explore how Sustainable Sandhills is using research programs and data to help individuals and organizations save energy and create a more sustainable community. A portion of your externship will be focused on working with Sustainable Sandhill’s Green Schools program, which teaches earth-friendly behaviors and helps local schools conserve energy and water. Your experience with these programs will position you as a resource and leader to your students and colleagues on the issues or topics of stewardship and sustainability. You will share that experience via a dynamic and engaging curriculum that reflects the insights gained in your externship.

In addition to the development of a new and innovative curriculum and your externship experience, you will also work with a local Institution of Higher Education and/or your local school system to plan and implement workshops and trainings for either pre-service and/or beginning teachers. This will allow you to share your resources and experience with those preparing to enter the profession. This additional commitment will most likely occur after your externship has culminated. Because of the unique requirements of this grant funded project, you will receive a total stipend of $10,000.

So, take a breath of fresh air as you begin to explore the various aspects of community sustainability.
