Dr. Jamie Lathan
Dr. Jamie Lathan currently serves as the Dean of Distance Education, and an Instructor of Humanities and Instructional Leadership at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) in Durham, N. C. where he received the 2020 University of North Carolina Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. He received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a National Board Certified teacher. He has worked with high school students of diverse abilities and backgrounds during his nearly 20-year career in education. His leadership and involvement in state and national social studies and distance education organizations mirrors his research interests: racial equity in social studies curriculum and teaching in online and face-to-face school environments. As a 2019 Kenan Fellow, he collaborated with another Fellow to create a racial equity tool for educator award organizations and school districts to use to assess their promotion and support of teachers of color. He resides in Durham with his beautiful wife, Lucinda, and their three young children.
