My lab experience has totally made me look at things in a brand new light.  My team and I have worked so hard at learning microbiology techniques and lingo.  Let’s see how our journey begins………

First we were introduced to our wonderful lab instructor and teacher who spent numerous hours helping us to get up to speed on our project and just giving us an overview of the scope of the research done in the lab.

Did you know that chickens as well as humans have microbes living inside of them? Bet you are like me and didn’t know that inside of the chicken lives salmonella?  Hmmmm?  So why then does the chicken not get sick?  Why is it that we (humans) always seem to be the ones harmed from this varmit.  LOL

“What in tarnation ” ( in my Yosemite Sam voice)?

Each given a sample of chicken feces that fell into one of these groups:  control, challenge, vaccine (received salmonella).

Whew,  then we had to extract the DNA from the sample, check it’s concentration, quantify and then try to determine from it if indeed the vaccine has any affect on the production of salmonella.

Look forward to updates of this experience in the Chicken Chronicles………..
