Although I don’t start officially in the Nevzorov lab until next week, as they stand now my three main goals for the internship are as follows:

  1. Find scientific articles written by members of the lab that I can use – at least parts of – in the classroom to increase the scientific literacy skills of my students.  I hope that sharing some of my experience in this lab with my students when we read these articles together will help increase their engagement.
  2. Experience the daily life of a scientist and bring back some of that experience to my classroom.  I would like to be able to share with my students what a career as a research scientist is actually like.  Additionally, I hope to model some of what I see in my classroom and make it a more inquiry-based learning environment.
  3. Learn more about membrane proteins and how their structures are elucidated!  I don’t know much about this topic so I’m excited to learn more.  I especially think it will be beneficial in my honors biology and AP biology classes; hopefully knowing more will help me make my cell transport units more exciting and relevant.  I don’t know how much of this detail I’ll be able to bring back to my students, but I’m hoping I can modify things that I learn in the lab to bring back to my classroom.

Once I start the internship officially my goals may change to suit the needs of my mentor and myself, but we’ll see!  Keep checking in on my blog to find out 🙂
