With the completion of the Gaston Dam in 1963, the surrounding area suddenly had the ability to support the rapidly growing industrialization and economic development occurring in the region. The construction of the dam and resulting 20,000+ acre lake harnessed the flow of the Roanoke River and turned it into a viable energy source that is capable of producing a substantial energy output each year.
In addition to its contribution to the infrastructure in the region, Lake Gaston has and continues to be a well-known tourist destination. Aside from boasting the ideal environment for outdoor enthusiasts, Lake Gaston is surrounded by a variety of shopping and dining options. Also, each year Lake Gaston hosts a number of holiday and cultural events. The influx of those enjoying all that the area has to offer results in a substantial impact on the local economy.
In this particular fellowship, you will spend a portion of the summer with Halifax Electric Membership Corp (EMC) exploring how they continue to build and develop the energy infrastructure to meet the growing demands in the region, both residential and commercial. The remainder of your summer will be spent with the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce conducting visitor and tourism research and evaluating how researched trends will impact the region in the future. More importantly, you will then translate your experience into a dynamic curriculum that will prepare your students to contribute to the region’s future growth, both in terms of infrastructure and economic development.
So, grab your goggles and swimsuit, because you’re about to take a plunge into the history and future of Lake Gaston and the surrounding area.
