Project:
Bring Airplane Manufacturing Into the Classroom
Mr. Scarfpin and another Fellow will collaborate with Spirit Aerosystems and Lenoir Community College’s cutting-edge Aerospace Manufacturing and Repair program to explore new job opportunities coming to North Carolina and the skills students will need to qualify for these positions. Partnered with Spirit AeroSystems, he will learn about aerostructure construction techniques, manufacturing processes, composite manufacturing and repair, and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining processes. He will engage in hands-on training at Lenoir Community College intended to teach students design and manufacturing skills critical to a wide range of aerospace careers. A s a Kenan NASA Flight Fellow, he will develop lessons and activities that not only teach the science and math content knowledge essential for these jobs, but build on current NASA materials to enhance students’ understanding of engineering principles.
