ONE FELLOWSHIP AVAILABLE
North Carolina has the highest Indigenous population east of the Mississippi. The North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission, a program of the N.C. Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR), is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting North Carolina’s American Indian history, arts, customs, cultures, and modern-day contributions. The commission and DNCR seek to provide North Carolina’s K-12 educators with high-quality, standards-aligned, and culturally responsive teaching resources that make visible the diversity of tribal life across North Carolina, past and present, while also elevating the themes of resistance, resilience, and resurgence of Native peoples.
The selected Kenan Fellow will be asked to travel to various DNCR tribal sites, attend tribal meetings, and visit/evaluate sites around the state to learn more about NC’s indigenous populations and translate this into classroom resources. Indigenous educators are encouraged to apply.
