Impact on Students

I want my summer internship to change my teaching methods to better serve my students.  I have already begun inquiry activities that require problem solving in my classes instead of lecture.  The students have enjoyed the inquiry activities and appear to be understanding the information better.  My Chemistry classes designed their own procedures for measuring length, mass, density, volume, and temperature instead of following a set I created.  Students were placed into groups to write procedures for their station and they had to give procedures for collecting their measurement and how to convert it into the metric system.  I typed up the different procedures to remove any identifying information, color coded each procedure, and placed the procedures at each station.  The students needed to select which procedure they used, why they picked it, and any changes that needed to be made.  The students did an extremely good job and realized that procedures have to be very specific in order to be followed exactly as the writers intended.  I will continue to use the inquiry activities in my classes to facilitate student learning and understanding.
