Reflections

I grew more than I expected.  I knew that the Kenan Fellowship would be an opportunity to grow  and learn, but I did not realize the impact it would have on my everyday teaching.  I have learned how important problem/project based instruction is for student learning.  I feel that my students understand my content better this year, since I have incorporated PBL in my classroom.  My students love hands-on learning where they figure out the answer.  I am no longer standing and presenting my content, but am a guide on the side when my students need me.  Some of my students did not like PBL as first; they were so used to answers being provided instead of finding them for their selves.  One of the first lessons I do with my students is a metric review activity, where the students need to create experiments to test different metric measurements(length, area, density, volume, etc).  Students did not realize how difficult procedure writing was and how much we assume readers know.  It is a great experience to learn that you may not have the answer and it is okay to fail.  I have recommended the Kenan Fellowship to my colleagues and one will be a Kenan Fellow for the 2016-2017 cohort.  I am so pleased I was able to be a Kenan Fellow and will continue to include things I learned during my fellowship into my classes.
