I get it!

Chemistry lends itself to many new concepts which can be difficult for students. Stoichiometry is the concept I find students have the most difficulty understanding. Stoichiometry is the use of the Mole to determine quantities needed to complete reactions based on the reactants needed for the desired products. One of my students was struggling with the concept of a limiting reactant, where only a certain amount of product could be produced. I gave the analogy of baking cupcakes. If your recipe needs 2 eggs, 3 cup of flour, and 1 cup of sugar to make 6 cupcakes and you have 1 egg, 3 cup of flour, and 1 cup of sugar, how many cupcakes can you make. The students said 3 very quickly and realized the recipe was the chemical formula and number of moles of each to make a product. During my fellowship I learned how important it is to make connection to students’ prior knowledge. This was an instance where I used a student’s knowledge of cooking to understand chemistry.
