Ms. Allison will partner with Dan Gwaltney, Carmela Fair and LaVerne Weldon at NC DPI for the launch of Home Base, the instructional improvement and student information system designed to house resources for all teachers. Mr. Baker will work with Dr. Hosni Hassan, NC State; Dr. Matt Koci, NC State; Dr. Andrea Azcarte-Peril, UNC-Chapel Hill; and Amy Chilcote and Autumn Guin of 4-H to translate laboratory research on Salmonella into a more “digestible” form.

His work will help give other teachers, students and informal educational audiences an increased understanding of food-borne illness and the necessary precautions that must be taken to prevent its outbreak.

After his time in the laboratory and during the second year of the project, he will work with fellow educators and the 4-H Youth and Volunteer Development Department at N.C. State University to create a curriculum for K-12 classrooms and informal educational environments.

Working alongside Doug Blew, VP of Global Manufacturing Engineering at CommScope, Ms.Boice will develop curriculum to better prepare local students for STEM-based degree programs while positioning North Carolina as a top global competitor.

CommScope, a leading global manufacturer of Telecommunications products, was founded and is currently headquartered in Hickory, NC. While CommScope has manufacturing capabilities located around the world, locally, the company has two manufacturing plants in Catawba County and one in Iredell County.

Partnered with industry experts, Jeff Bender, Danylu Hundley, Jan Marie Bartholomew, Michele Reedy and Gabe Cumming of the Warren County Farm Bureau and Warren County Economic Development, Ms. Boyd will discover how and why today’s farmers are able to meet the food needs of growing populations.

As Warren County’s newest authority in agricultural science, she is charged with exposing students to the food supply chain, careers in agriculture, historical shifts in farming and the critical need for farming to feed the world population.

Ms. Brickhouse will play a key role in NC Department of Public Instruction’s intensive, blended professional development initiative focused on implementing the Common Core and Essential Standards.

This opportunity puts her on the cutting edge of creating materials, lessons and educator training sessions for all content areas.

She will join content specialists and professional development consultants Beth Edwards and Sandra Warren of NC DPI.

Ms. Coldren will have a crucial role in preparing curriculum materials, modeling best practices in curriculum and instruction and training North Carolina teachers.

Working with mentor Julie Joslin and Lisa McIntosh of NC DPI, she deliver a webinar to other teachers in fall 2013 as part of her Fellowship project and lead a professional development workshop at her Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA).

Partnered with NC Department of Public Instruction expert Tammy Howard, Ms. DePerno will help to develop effective assessment items and tools to assess student growth using the “Measure of Student Learning Common Exams.”

In order to ensure the validity of exam questions, NC DPI seeks input from teachers. Ms. DePerno will play a critical role in developing and determining the validity of test questions used to assess student annual progress.

Ms. Forbes will engage in a Fellowship project on aerial robotics supported by Lenovo, one of the top two PC makers globally. Her mentor for the project is Sam Morris who serves as the Worldwide Education Segment Executive at Lenovo.

She sponsors a FIRST robotics club at her school for students to compete at regional and state competitions. Over the last several years, she has integrated robotics into the curriculum and was awarded a $4,000 SeaPerch grant from the Office of Naval Research to be able to conduct underwater robotics activities.

Ms. Furr will collaborate with staff from the N.C. Science Festival including Jonathan Frederick and Lizza Igoe, UNC Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and faculty from a variety of disciplines to create an innovative program that includes classroom resources to help students think critically and globally about the impact of new scientific discoveries.

She will create resources to help students weigh their perspectives and communicate their opinions on today’s most important science-related issues as well as enable other teachers to implement the program at their school through the creation of a comprehensive teacher guide.

Ms. Gaestel will partner with Navy master artisans and skilled engineers as they work to support and maintain the U.S. fleet of helicopter and rotor aircraft.

Working with a mentor, Bill Fortney, Director of NC State Engineering at Craven Community College, Ms. Gaestel will share her fresh knowledge and invigorating experiences with students by creating compelling classroom lessons that align with state and national standards.

As an authority in K-12 education, she will provide insight into how workplace challenges can be incorporated into authentic classroom lessons.

Ms. Harvey is partnering with Dr. Keith Schimmell and Dr. Ghasem Shahbazi at NC A&T’s CREST Bioenergy Center as they develop technology that will make biofuels a more viable source of renewable energy.

She will participate in experiments with cutting-edge bioenergy experimental setups, attend bioenergy seminars, and help deliver high school teacher and student summer camps.

By project’s end, she will create innovative lesson plans that fuel student interest in bioenergy research.

Ms. Herrick designed her own Kenan Fellowship project that will focus on financial literacy and global awareness.

Lukas Brun, who is the Senior Research Analyst at the Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness at Duke University, will partner with her on the project.

She will also partner with Stephen Day, the Programs Director at the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE).

Ms. Hines will have a crucial role in preparing curriculum materials, modeling best practices in curriculum and instruction and training North Carolina teachers.

Her project will also involve capturing digital video of excellent instructional delivery of challenging concepts.

Partnered with NC Department of Public Instruction expert Tammy Howard, Ms. Jolley will help to develop effective assessment items and tools to assess student growth using the “Measure of Student Learning Common Exams.”

Ms.Lawrence will collaborate with Enoc Henry and Biogen Idec’s team of scientists to develop classroom curriculum supporting students’ knowledge and understanding of bio-pharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing processes.

By joining Biogen Idec on the cutting edge of biopharmaceutical discovery, she will create dynamic curriculum to engage the next generation of biotech researchers and scientists.

Mr. Littell is joining John Garner at the Williamsdale Field Laboratory to create a dynamic curriculum to engage the next generation of plant scientists and bio-energy researchers.

He will assist in the planting, cultivating and harvesting of potential bio-fuel crops and develop engaging STEM lessons designed to help students K-12 students understand the science behind horticultural practices.

Ms. Lowman will help build a virtual library of curriculum aligned with Common Core Standards.

Partnering with Morgan Jackson at the Duplin Winery, Ms.Marcin will examine the science, technological, engineering and mathematical-related (STEM) opportunities that this field offers for students who may aspire to a career agriculture or agritourism.

She will explore the aspects of grape and wine production from cultivation to distribution as well as  the connection between agriculture and tourism.

Ms. Martin will gain a real-world perspective of lean manufacturing, a production process that helps transform companies into highly-efficient and profitable enterprises.

Working with Jerry Lakey at Ingersoll Rand, she will be able to demonstrate the engineering and mathematical principles industries use to streamline resources and create efficient best practices in manufacturing.

Ultimately, she will use your knowledge of lean manufacturing methods to develop engaging lessons that inspire students to apply these principles in their own projects.

Dr. McGuire will have a crucial role in preparing curriculum materials, modeling best practices in curriculum and instruction and training North Carolina teachers.

From her experience, she will develop relevant and engaging STEM lessons designed to help students understand the science behind environmentally-responsible production methods and to become more aware of opportunities and needs in the field.

Ms. Phelps will help build a virtual library of curriculum aligned with Common Core Standards.

Working with mentor Barbara Bissell of the NC Department of Instruction, she will help to deliver a webinar to other teachers in the fall 2013 and lead a regional professional development workshop.

Ms. Pittman will partner with Krista Horne and other experts at Vidant Duplin Hospital to examine the science, technological, engineering and mathematical-related (STEM) opportunities that this field offers for students who may aspire to a career in health care.

As part of the fellowship, she will collaborate with various hospital personnel to observe cutting-edge research and patient care practices; and develop relevant and engaging STEM lessons designed to help K-12 students understand the science behind the latest healthcare practices and to become better aware of opportunities and needs in the field.

Ms. Powers will partner with John Parker of Cottle Farms, a year-round supplier of fruits and vegetables one of the largest growers of strawberries in the Eastern Carolinas.

She will explore various aspects of the agribusiness to bring engaging and relevant STEM-related lesson back to her classroom.

Working in partnership with the mentors, she will explore the current and potential applications of micropropagation as well as the various economic and environmental implications.

Culminating your exploration of the research, she will translate your newly acquired knowledge into an engaging curriculum aligned with the Common Core or Essential Standards for use across North Carolina.

Partnering with Dr. Richard Smith and Snehalata Huzurbaza at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), Ms. Turner will help open an avenue for North Carolina K-12 students to learn about statistics in memorable and meaningful ways.

As part of her Fellowship, she will collect data and prepare analyses to show how climate extremes are changing in terms of severity and frequency and research the theories concerning the extent to which this can be attributed to human activity.

Mr. VonEitzen will join Lisa Grable at the FREEDM Systems Center as well other scientists and teachers as they create dynamic curriculum materials that highlight the importance of renewable energy research for students.

His studies will involve the implications to industry, society, and individuals of a grid incorporating renewable energy and how this aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core, and state standards.

Working with the FREEDM System Center’s content experts and scientists, he will translate his newfound knowledge into engaging lesson plans integrating science and engineering practices and cross-cutting concepts for use across North Carolina.

Ms. Williams will partner Christina Phillips at Murphy-Brown, LLC as she gains unparalleled access to the various aspects of the pork industry.

She will use her newly-acquired knowledge to develop engaging lessons that provide students with a glimpse into a thriving local industry that relies on STEM skills.

Mr. Wood will join energy experts Sharene Pierce and Ashley Thompson of Duke Progress Energy to learn about the current energy supply, explore the industry’s research into alternative energy sources and develop relevant and engaging STEM lessons designed to help students understand the science behind energy production and to become more aware of potential career opportunities in the field.
